Are you struggling to climb out of the scroll hole?
I don’t know about you, but my addiction to the scroll hole is bad. I mean really bad. I know there are millions of Reels out there, and yet I find myself watching the same ones over and over: Golden Buzzer moments on America’s Got Talent (from 5 years ago), soldiers coming home to their pets, new parents surprising their family with the arrival of twins, attractive bakers cooking cakes in seductive ways. You know the drill.
Sometimes this numbing is good. It makes me forget what’s going on outside and I can just sit back and laugh (or cry). But other times, I feel this deep sense of judgment.
‘Stop scrolling, get off your stupid phone! Go and do something productive!!’ I say to myself over and over. And yet, I can’t seem to tear myself away.
This is familiar territory for all of us at Nakie HQ, so we’ve compiled a list of things that help us minimise our screen time and reconnect with other parts of ourselves.
6 things to take your mind off things that aren’t on your phone
1. Keep a book or a magazine you like in the toilet.
Nothing too serious. Many escape to the toilet for a little bit of peace and quiet (hi, parents). Instead of looking at more pictures of that girl you went to high school with a decade ago and haven’t spoken to since, engage with content that fills your cup.

2. Get a book of puzzles.
Yes, those ones with a random celebrity on the front and BIG BOLD TEXT promising cars and new toasters. I love doing the silly little find-a-words.
|
3. Need half an hour? Take a free yoga class from Yoga with Adriene.
Set up your laptop and cram yourself beside your bed and pull some stretches. Ideally you can do this in the park (does anyone have any good audio recommendations for yoga on Spotify?)
|
4. Play really loud music in the shower.
I find if I want to drown out my brain for a bit, activating a sense through sound has a huge impact.
|
5. Plan something exciting. I find the power of having something to look forward to really motivating. Bonus points if it’s a camping trip. |
6. Head outside with a pencil and some paper and draw a tree in the local park. Draw it knowing you’ll probably throw the piece of paper out. This always helps me let my guard down. It’s allowed to be crap! Nobody is ever going to see it! |
Let us know if there are any strategies you employ to tear yourself away.
We love hearing from you,
Nakie
