The Best Hammocks for Camping in Australia
A camping gear list can quickly get out of hand. Solar showers, camp ovens, titanium sporks… but ask any seasoned camper and they’ll tell you the one bit of kit that never lets you down is a hammock. It’s your bed, your chair, your stargazing lounger, and occasionally your “don’t talk to me, I’m napping” sign.
In Australia, where weekends are made for pitching a tent by the coast, lazing in the bush, or road-tripping as far away from suburbia as possible, a hammock (or two) is an absolute essential.
So, what are the best hammocks made of? And what should you look for when shopping for a hammock? We’re kinda hammock experts at Nakie, so here’s what you need to know.

What Makes The Best Camping Hammock?
If you’ve ever bought a hammock, you’ll know they’re not all created equal. Some sag like an old couch. Some take 45 minutes, 17 knots, and an hour-long YouTube tutorial to set up. The best hammocks for camping tick a few boxes:
-
Sturdy AF. You don’t want to hit the dirt mid-nap.
-
Easy setup. No one likes rope burn.
-
Compact and lightweight. Every gram counts when you’re carrying it into camp.
-
All season-ready. Needs to be built tough for sun, wind, and surprise summer storms.
-
Eco-credentials. Nice for you, even nicer for the planet.
Sound familiar? That’s basically Nakie’s hammock collection CV.
Why Nakie’s Hammocks Are a Favourite Amongst Aussie Campers
Campers rate a hammock on three core features: strength, comfort, and how easy it is to set up. Nakie nails all three (don’t just trust us – trust our reviews!). With triple stitching, tough polyester straps, and a 225kg weight rating, you know it’s not going to let you down. It clips up in minutes and once you’re in, the soft, breathable fabric makes it easy to stretch and catch some shut-eye, even overnight. Add in a lifetime warranty, and you’ve got a hammock designed to last season after season.
And here’s the bonus: every Nakie hammock is made from 37 recycled plastic bottles, and each purchase plants four trees. So while you’re kicking back at camp, you’re also doing a little good for the planet.

Hammock vs. Tent: Do You Really Need Both?
Classic camping question: if you’ve got a hammock, do you even need a tent?
-
Tent pros: More protection, more privacy, less mozzie exposure.
-
Hammock pros: Way lighter, faster setup, comfier sleep (especially if you’re a side sleeper).
Many Aussie campers use both. Think of your hammock as the peanut butter to your tent’s jelly (well, jam)… It’s simply better together. But if you don’t mind being at one with nature and the elements, then stuff the tent and just bring your trusty hammock.

And oh my god, we love this one:
“What a great piece of kit! Folds up nice and compact and unravels into a super quick setup. I particularly like that the hammock is a bit wider than all of the other camping hammocks that I checked - it means that I get a proper wrap around the body and no fear of falling out when I sleep. One really nice little detail is that the hammock arrived in compostable packaging. Nakiew's commitment to the environment is really inspiring.” – Jarrod.
Seasoned campers keep coming back because once you’ve had a hammock afternoon, there’s no going back.

How to Set Up a Hammock (In Less Than 60 Seconds)
All you need is yourself, two sturdy trees (or posts, or bull bars), and your Nakie hammock. Not to brag, but our team record is 27 seconds, but even on your first go, it’s ridiculously simple. Here’s how:
-
Find two anchor points. Look for two healthy trees (or posts) around 3–6 metres apart. Aim for trunks at least the width of your arm (about 15cm) so you’re not stressing the tree.
-
Wrap the straps. Take the included tree-friendly straps, loop them around each trunk at about head height, and pull them through their own loop to lock them in place.
-
Clip in the hammock. Use the carabiners to hook each end of the hammock onto the straps. The multiple loops let you adjust the tension – start in the middle and tweak from there.
-
Test and adjust. Sit down gently to check the height. The sweet spot is roughly hip-level with a nice smile-shaped curve. Too tight or too saggy? Just move the clips to another loop.

Best Hammocks for Camping FAQs
Can you actually sleep overnight in a hammock?
Yep! Nakie hammocks are roomy and comfy enough to crash in all night. The breathable recycled fabric keeps you cool on hot nights, and if it’s chilly, you can throw in a puffy blanket for extra warmth. Not into mozzies or surprise rain? Pair your hammock with a bug net and tarp and you’re golden.
How do you clean a hammock?
A quick hand wash in cold water with a gentle, non-bleach detergent does the trick. Rinse it out, then hang it somewhere shady to dry. Don’t leave it soaking, and whatever you do, don’t put it in the dryer.
What if there aren’t any trees around?
Don’t fret – you can clip your hammock up on a balcony, deck posts, roof racks, or even your bullbar if you’re road tripping. People have even rigged them on sailboats… the options are pretty endless.
What’s the weight limit?
Nakie hammocks hold up to 225kg. That’s two average-sized adults and still room for snacks.
What if it rains?
Fun! Pair your hammock with a tarp and you’re sorted.
Why not just bring a camp chair?
We’re not stopping you from bringing a camping chair! But can your camp chair double as a bed? Or swing? Or nap pod? We didn’t think so.
